My wife and I recently purchased our 2nd home. Its brand new but, has sat empty for 13 months now. Its has black Whirlpool kitchen appliances (side-by-side fridge, micro, stove, & dishwasher), my wife would love to have stainless steel. Does anyone know of an appliance store where they would be willing to take them on a trade? I realize there would have to be some compensation on our part but, seems ashame not to get what we want w/ brand new home.

Not sure at all....possibly a Rent-a-center? Or you can just try and sell the appliances on your own on CraigsList or via ads in the Newspaper of a board at the local grocery store.

I think it depends on what state you live in. I'm in NY and there is a health law that prohibits retailers from taking back any appliance once it has been delivered, unless it is defective and being sent back to the manufacturer under warranty. Otherwise it is considered "used" and they aren't allowed to either buy it or take it back from the customer.

A few years ago when I redid my kitchen I bought a new Thermador smoothtop range. After only a week of use I realized that it didn't have enough "oomph" to handle certain things efficiently. I called the store I bought it (and ALL my other appliances from) and asked if I could 'trade in' the new Thermador for a new Wolf smoothtop and pay the difference (the Wolf was about $600 more than the Thermador). They told me no, they can't do that with appliances because of the laws.

I ended up selling the Thermador cooktop on eBay for about $250 less than what I paid for it a few weeks before. There's no law against selling used appliances privately (in NY anyway) so that might be a good solution for you. Either on eBay specified as "local delivery or pickup only", or on Craigslist.

You could always ask the builder (or whoever was the owner) where the appliances came from and give the store a call and ask them. Why not try selling them on craigslist.
