Do you leave an extra house key with friends or neighbors? We are new in Texas and twice paid money to locksmith because once we locked ourselves out once I lost my key on jogging trail. We have no family here but neighbors are nice, is it appropriate to give them an extra pair?
I would suggest buying one of those magnetic key hiding things (not sure what to call it - you can find them at the big box stores or your local hardware store by the key making area) and stick it/them someplace that you can find it but yet it is very nondescript and would not be found easily by a thief. Besides, how many thieves would actually look for a key - they'd just bust out a window or something, I would think!!
A few of our friends have keys to the house, but we also keep spare keys in the garage safe. Our garage has keypad access (the garage door is always locked) so it's quicker to open the safe for a spare key than to call on friends or neighbors who might not be home when I need them.

I was afraid this would happen so I installed the push-button /combination type of deadbolt lock. This is the exact product I got for under 100 bucks, and it only takes a few mins to install (with 30 min of reading the instruction): Schlage BE365VPLY505 Plymouth Keypad Deadbolt, Bright Brass - Amazon.com
BTW, What's the going rate to get a locksmith to your house?
I once got a call from a friend who was delayed and needed me to let her dogs out. Her spare key was inside a fake sprinkler head. I realize I am letting the cat out of the bag here, but they sell them at Home Depot for this purpose, and we've got dozens of sprinkler heads on our property. It would take quite a while to check them all.
I just had extra house keys made this week in order to give one to a neighbor. But that's just so she could let our pets out if necessary. Just to have a spare key if locked out? I'd hide one outside.
House keys? Cripes I don't even know where mine are, haven't seen them in 5 years. I hope to God somebody doesn't lock the doors, I'd be screwed. I believe there may be an extra set to our house at the State Troopers house next door. I vaguely remember giving him a set years ago when we went somewhere.

What about when no electricity to open the garage door?

Also comes in bronze, which is what we have. Started off with one into the garage, loved it so much we added one to the shop. Of course, there is a house key hidden in the shop and v.v.
