We just bought a house. I am considering buying a nest thermostat. They are about $200. The local utility company is offering a $25 rebate with purchase.
I know that there are cool factors involved like I can adjust the temp from my phone.
But is it really that much better than a regular programmable thermostat that I can buy for $50?
Regular programmable thermostats that you have to program through front panel buttons are terrible to program, especially the 7-day ones. The Nest works very nicely and it has the auto-learn feature; I've had mine for about a year. It also looks good. The Filtrete looks like a good intermediate option but I've never used it.
We were just discussing the Nest this past weekend and our relatives were raving about it. I have a feeling I'll busting my husband's chops to install one this summer.

It takes less than 5 minutes to program one. I don't know, I guess I just don't see the benefit of it over a normal programmable t-stat besides the cool-factor.
