I've been struggling with this corroded drain nut the past two days. Internet searches suggested spraying wd-40 overnight, heating it up with a hair dryer, turning the other way. Finally, I bought a $5 hacksaw and and started sawing. It surprising cut through parts of it and i could see the other metal behind the nut, but i still can't get it to unscrew. Unfortunately due to the angle and size, I cannot cut the nut diagonally. I tried having someone hold on to the pipe wrench around the pipe and then i took a different wrench and tried to unlock the nut but didn't have any luck.
what can i do now? checked out some power cutters at home depot that were selling anywhere from 50 and up...
Heat usually works best, you might try a hotter propane torch, (a hair blow dryer may not get hot enough) be careful with the flame. Get as big a wrench on the nut as possible and tap it with a hammer to help loosen the nut.
If you have made a cut thru the nut down to the pipe threads, can you now pry the cut ends of the nut away from the pipe ?. Or make another cut anywhere on the nut ??
Cutting with the hacksaw was not easy. The nut is rather short and it's so far up against the underneat of the basin that it's hard to get the right angle to cut. But i did manage to cut a few slices here and there and i could see through into the pipe.
I don't know if it was the cutting or the hammering or the wd-40 or the blow dryer. Maybe all of the above? But i tried turning the other way while holding down the pipe with a pipe wrench and it moved. I thought man, i was turning in the wrong direction the whole time but the nut was actually moving up. So then i turned it in the other (correct) direction and it came down. I thought at one point I could just use my hand but nope, every few rotations it would get stuck. It's around 60% down now. Will have to get a wire or toothbrush to scrape off the rust to make the rest of the job easier.
now the problem is with the drain stopper. The one i have came with a black cable rather than a metal lever. Well, i have the short lever that i insert from outside and the black cable that i stick up from inside. Those screw into one another, but the cable doesn't attach to anything under the basin so it 's like....loose. and when i actually pull up and push down the lever, it doesn't function correctly. is this cable supposed to attach to the whole from underneath or do i have to use an adhesive?

Dremel being carful then a light pop with a metal chisel at the cut to finish,so as not to cut too deep.
