Hello—I was hoping to get some input from the group. We just moved into a new-build house out in Katy. When I try to plug in devices into electric outlets, I have to push really hard and jiggle the plug into the outlet in order to get it in. When I look into the outlet, there seems to be a layer of plastic inside the outlet. Is this some sort of child-proofing, or did the electrician…forget to remove part of the packaging? Maybe this is a silly question, but since I’ve never lived in a newer house, I am not familiar with this. Thanks!

They are designed that way and required by current building code. You are correct that it is a type of childproofing.

It gets easier after you use the outlet.

Childproof outlets are part of the building code now. Just use them a few times and they will get easier.

I know, I know, "It's for the children!!"
Edit: And yet, there are no seat belts on my kid's school bus.
I find comments like this funny, there's a reason why there codes.

What's the point of requiring all those fancy "Finger-safe" receptacles?
I know how to find the hot, neutral and ground and can hard wire anything up to 600V
Everybody else should be able to do the same

Dude that's a ridiculously far stretch. Clearly the guy is not talking about electrical code as a whole.

OP, those are tamper resistant receptacles and are required by code. any device that increases electrical safety and decreases the chance of getting shocked are ok in my books. the trick behind them is that you must push equally with both prongs for the cord to go in easier. when you do this, the plastic guard will move out of the way.
