The orangey stains on my bathtub is rust. However, the bottom horizontal part is covered with something gray - is that rust also, or some kind of mildew?
I used Bar Keeper's Friend on the whole bath and it cleared both areas. I would like to know what the gray stuff is anyway. Thanks.
Are there many other products with oxalic acid like BKF?
Could just be soap scum. Could be mineral deposits liberally mixed with ordinary dirt and soap scum. Could be some mildew mixed in too. Either way, it's gone, don't worry too much.
Like I said, soap scum or mineral deposits (scale) or both, with plain old dirt (mostly skin) and molds/mildew/bacteria mixed in. Both soap scum and scale are caused by hard water. Oxalic acid dissolves iron stains but doesn't do much for scale and soap scum, so it was probably the abrasive action which removed it -- probably mostly soap scum then, because scale is harder to remove. Bleach will kill mildew in soap and mineral films but won't remove the films.
