I have a 7 year old GE Profile dishwasher. Stainless steel interior. It used to run quiet, but now sounds like an power sander is running on the inside of the door with each cycle. I think it cost about $700 new.

I imagine a repair person would be at least $80 for trip charge, plus cost of whatever the repair may be. Should I buy a new one?

The repairman should give you an up front cost to repair it and then it depends on if it's an e-z fix to stay with it, or if it's expensive to repair replace it especially if it costs more than 50% of a new one. You need to determine your $$ point of no return.

We were faced with the same dilemma a few weeks ago- actually the history is a bit more succinct- we lucked out and snuck in just under the warranty years ago to replace a control panel circuit board that controlled the pre-heating of the water and would have been several hundred dollars to replace and, when years later the same symptoms showed up, taking over four hours a cycle, we knew the 13 y.o. Bosch was toast. Got a new Sears Elite with their 30% off sale and love this new unit- so quiet, made the Bosch seem noisy in comparison, super efficient and effective cleaning- and with cool colored lights that indicate the cycle. Sometimes you just have to make the jump and replace it.

I'd use the model number to search online to see if other owners have experienced what you're experiencing and look there for advice that might help in your decision.

I have a Sears model that I had installed 9 yrs ago during a remodel. I'm not happy with these water saving dishwashers that seem to run waaaaay too long. Also since I have hard water & phosphates have been removed from dishwasher soap, getting clean dishes without a film/build-up has been my biggest issue.

Like water heaters... water condition is what will kill dishwashers prematurely.
How is YOUR water condition? Lime? Minerals?

Start with the owners manual for the recommended maintenance. LINK
Then one or another of the over the counter cleaners.

You may still need a new pump. google for which your model uses.
Labor is about the same for all models but part prices do vary LINK

Have you checked to see if a utensil hasn't somehow become caught in the pump/grinder?

You might need a water softener. Lime in our area destroys fixtures and kills cats (urinary tract infection - I tell everyone to feed cats bottled water).

Default Consumer Reports says

CR says: replace.
CR says: Bosch.
Dave says: look at those with a list price of >$900 USD.

It's a GE. Never use GE with anything that touches water. Replace.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I hate to think it's related, but I had a water softener until just a few weeks ago. It was just over 7 years old! I think the resin went bad so I unplugged and bypassed the unit.

The sound is coming from inside the panel and makes varying sounds - again, more like a power sander.

Sorry to hear about your cat, Fleck.

I think I'll get the water softener replaced then go for the new dishwasher.
