I don't know how old the thermostat is in my house. I moved in in March, 2010. So that's 3.5 years. I recently remodeled my kitchen and dining room, so the thermostat was detached, but then reattached. I don't recall any problems last winter though, so I don't think it's related to that.

Here is the issue: last night, i set up the program for my heat. But the furnace ran basically all night long (steam heat, radiators). I had it set to 65 for last night, then down to 58 at 11:30pm. assuming i set it all properly (will check tonight when i get home), what might cause it to keep running? Isn't the sensor in the thermostat supposed to shut my furnace off when it reaches the proper heat? My dining room, where the thermostat is located, read 78 degrees at 5am this morning when the radiators started steaming again. it shouldn't have fired back on.

Any suggestions?

Is this a newer/digital thermostat, or an old mercury-based one? If you're not sure, how old does it look?

the old type was just a switch it can only be on or off. if the furnace runs all the time or never then the thermostat is broken.this assumes everything else works.just buy a new thermostat.

Programmable thermostats are not like the old fashioned ones that ran for years. Many have batteries that should be changed regularly (I change mine annually), and when the batteries are weak, they make act "strangely" (as in possibly not telling the furnace to shut off). I also had a programmable go to hell after a couple of years (it came with the furnace) so I had the furnace guy install a Honeywell. It was twice the price but reliability is priceless.

Can you turn off your boiler? It might be quicker to fix if you go to a hardware store to buy a new one.

You should have your heating and air conditioning system checked once a year to make sure everything is operating property, this will save you money in the long run. Have them check your thermostat if you don't think it is working correctly.
