The other thing we have to remember is that stainless steel has become much more affordable than it was in the past. They weren't mass-produced so they were more expensive. As the cost came down, their popularity went up. I don't think they are a fad at all. I think they have just become more affordable.

More affordable than white or black applicances? Or just more affordable thatn s/s used to be? I still believe it's all relative to what each of us prefers. I just don't like the look of s/s, looks like a kitchen in a restaurant/hospital/school vs someone's home.

And, it is very true that the media will push what the sponsors dictate; and hey, the sponsor is the one paying.

I prefer white appliances. My kitchen is too small and it doesn't have a window. Stainless steel would make my kitchen too dark.

I like the white as well, seems brighter and cheerier than s/s. But, it's all what each of us prefers.

When we bought our house in 2005, we got SS appliances. Yes, they were "in", but I also liked the look. Well, with three little kids, the appliances looked awful! They were smudged and scratched and just so hard to keep looking nice.

Fast forward to now and we just moved in our new house and I went with all black appliances - much better.

That is another issue I have with s/s....hard to maintain. Thanks for your input!

Especially when you have 3 small children, as I do. You have to have a special cleaner for stainless steel appliances. I had my own business where I cleaned new homes after their construction, before the closings. I always knew I was earning my money when I saw ss appliances.

The stainless steel look is popular...I just read the other day that silver cars are the most sold in the world.

I never understand when people say this, but black appliances are just as hard to keep clean. We had black and it was just as dirty and full of fingerprints as our stainless is today. And it was just as hard to keep clean. As for keeping stainless clean, I do not think it is anymore difficult than black. I just wipe it down with a soapy dish cloth and wipe it with paper towel. No problems and we have two very messy kids. Jay

I was under the same impression about black appliances.
Maybe it depends on how the light hits it?
I know my husband's black car shows dirt right away.
