That's how I understand it as well. If the sun shines in your door onto one of the sensors, IIRC, you want to have the transmitter side in the sun. The sun can kind of mess up or confuse the receiver side.
I didn't know that....but I have a north facing driveway...rarely would the sun hit the sensors.
I know I have 2 sensors on each door, they're each about 1ft off the ground, but I don't remember which one is amber and which one is green. Just got new doors & openers last month.

The amber (sending) and green (receiving) color convention is a Chamberlain (including LiftMaster and Craftsman) convention. If your garage door opener is a Genie, Genie Pro, or Overhead Door unit, then the LEDs on the sensors will be green (sending) and red (receiving).
FYI, our garage door faces south, and occasionally in the early spring and early fall we would have the sun hitting the receiving eye. Therefore we have someone stand outside to place a shadow on it while it is closing. The garage at our old house at Virginia Beach faced south as well and had the same layout as ours. I think I remember our friends' house garage that we visited this past Christmas Eve was facing north, although I am not 100% sure.
In addition, our neighbors in Virginia Beach also had a garage door opener (well before we bought one), and they also had the sensors in the same orientation we had, and their house faced south as well.
So, could the convention be that south facing garages have the sending eye on the right and receiving eye on the left, and north facing garages have the opposite layout?

No....depends whether the sun hits it in the morning or afternoon, season change....you might have to put a small shade over the pick-up eye....
LiftMaster - Normally, green on right and Amber on left. But it's not a rule
