I have a large crawl space that is gravel with a vapor barrier where I use the lower level that has a full size door and 7ft+ head room for storage of all my landscape gear. I would like to floor at least the lower level... there are two levels higher that are usable but have less head room.

I was thinking I might use deck footings and 4x4's to support 2x6 runners (that would be ~2" to 8" above grade to get level) and 3/4" MDF as a floor. This is just a guess based upon past projects.

Although I have done various small construction projects, I have no experience with this so I am looking for advice on materials and design.

I have seen a number of floors done that vary from crap to excellent and would like to shoot for economical and relatively easy to do but still usable and durable. What is your experience?

2x8 runners on 24-inch centers
no to MDF. Use plywood. MDF does not stand up to water at all and lacks strength.

I was thinking pier blocks 4' oc with 4x6's. Then you could sheath it with 2x6 tounge and grove to reduce overall height. Pier blocks can be 6' oc under the 4x6's.

Why not just a concrete slab?

Thanks for the responses.

I'm surprised about the MDF comment as this floor would not be directly exposed to water (I know MDO is the outdoor version). I have used MDF for temporary fixes outside and after years of limited rain it looks ok. Will it absorb water even if not in direct contact with moisture?

Since the gravel base is far from level and not close to vehicle access I don't think concrete would be very easy and might block moisture movement.

I will have to go out and price 2x8 over 2x6 as well as ply vs MDF.

How about deck squares or concrete pavers 16x16 0r 8x16. Gravel base is already there.
