I have no idea how old our fridge is but I'm guessing 5-7 years old. Stainless LG French door fridge. Bottom freezer.

I turned on the "fast ice" feature Saturday night and immediately it started loudly humming. It has hardly quit since. We vacuumed it yesterday and DH took off the back and saw one fan wasn't moving, seemed to be stuck - got it going again. It was still humming.

Came downstairs this morning and it was quiet. Opened the door and it started right back up again.

All along I've noticed what is basically an iceberg on the back wall of the freezer. And yesterday noticed that foods in the freezer were covered with frost - even something I'd put in just a couple hours earlier. This morning I took a hammer and broke away all the ice. That was an hour ago and it just stopped, oops, just started again. But when I open any of the doors it stops.

Have temp set at 40* for fridge and 0* for freezer.

It seems something might be wrong with the defrost feature?

Any experts out there want to share an idea?

TIA.

I would call the manufacturer of the refrigerator and ask if that is normal operation for "fast ice".

Lately refrigeration technology has changed quite a bit from the refrigeration unit just turning on or off (humming noise). Some house air conditioning systems have many "in-betweens" of refrigeration. Cool very fast to cool just a little - this saves energy. Possible a newer refrigerator does the same!

And for fast ice, you would want maximum cold and no defrost cycle. And then after fast ice was turned off, it would go back to regular operation - defrost cycle. Anyway ask the manufacturer.

Your defrost heater is not working. It's a good bet that the heater is burned out. This is an easy replacement if you want to do it yourself.

I'm not sure if this explains your problem with the icemaker- but it has to be fixed anyway.
