LAKEWOOD, Wash. — When Tammy Johnson and her husband decided to have a barbeque with their grandchild, she never realized it would change her life. A day later, she told Q13FOX News, “I just had pain. You just wouldn’t think you would have eaten something that would cause this.”
I read about something similar a while back. I was looking for a grill brush that is decent when I stumbled on it. I have always used stainless wire brushes just like that and had seen them losing bristles too. I ended up going with a device that is essentially a set of tongs with a spring that grips stainless scrubber pads. It isn't all that either, but it no losing bristles and you can easily swap them out.
I use short wire brush to clean my grill before each usage. I first heat up the grill to about 600+ and burn away the old stuff. Clean with brush. Once the grill is heated up again, I clean it with paper towels soak in oil. If I am cook steak, I use trimmed fat from my freezer and clean the grill off with it.
When I am done cooking, I don't clean the crates. Leave it there until next use. You actually get a coat of rust if you clean off you grill after each use.
I use a scraper that has several different sized grooves. Then I finish it with scrunched up aluminum foil followed by the paper towels and oil after the grill is heated up. Just never had much luck with the bristle brush, they don't get it clean enough. I do leave it for next time too like sj08054.
The brushes that are embedded in plastic are the main problem - cheap, cheap, cheap. If you get it near a hot grate it melts immediately. The wood brushes are ok. Still have to be careful though.
I made chili for a work party, and cooked it in a cast iron kettle (which I cleaned with a wire brush). I got a nice bowl full and found one or two of the long metal bristles in my bowl. I'm just thankful that no one else found any in their food.
I clean my grill with a wire brush, but I've never heard of this happening before now. This is something that you just don't think about happening with all of the other stuff you have to think about. Thanks for the heads up!
