Its a big mystery. I live in a cottage apartment - Basically a small house thatnis only a studio apartment. I will put the AC on and it will get down to 74 degrees. But after an hour or two, it with by almost 10 degrees warmer than that.

Its causing my to run my AC all the time. I can't sleep,if its hot.

Obviously the black shingles on the roof absorb heat during the day. But why doesmit get so warm in here at night?

I just can't figure it out.

I have windows facing south and north.

Thanks guys

What's outside your apartment? Grass lawn, woods... asphalt parking lot, maybe? I used to live in an apartment that faced out over an asphalt lot, and it was amazing how hot that place got overnight. It absorbed heat all day and just radiated it all night.

The thermal cycle of our house in Florida was similar. The cement block construction would absorb heat all day and then radiate it at night. Shade helped considerably.

roof and attic gets hot and radiates the heat back into the house at night too.

Look for sources of heat that keep your house warm.

I live in a small studio. If I run my AC on a hot day for an hour when I go to bed......the temp will go down to 69-70 degrees. But when the AC shuts off and I wake up 3 or 4 hours later.......the dang temp will be back up to 73-75 degrees. But if I shut off the refrigerator (2 gallons of ice keep things cool) when I go to bed.....the temp will drop down even more and not come back up. The compressor and condenser puts out quite a bit of heat.........on most fridges it is like having a heater running off and on all night.

I would guess a lack of sufficient insulation.

Do you have a large television, by any chance? I have a 55" LCD television in my den and it generates a TON of heat; it's like a furnace. If the room heats up about an hour after you've turned on the TV, then that could be the issue.

It sounds like you are turning it OFF after it reaches 74 degrees. Of course it will get 10 degrees warmer 2 hours after being turned off. In the summer, you have to keep air-conditioners running all night long if you can't sleep when it's hot. Doesn't your air-conditioner have an "energy safer" feature that monitors the room temperature and it turns off and on as needed?

Try installing a ceiling fan. You live in New York State. It's not hotter there than it is here. I get by most nights with just a ceiling fan. We haven't turned on our air-conditioning yet this year.

I don't recommend the advice to turn off your refrigerator. That's food poisoning waiting to happen.
