My first priority would buy something I personally would like.
For me, that would be French Door, but I cannot fit one in my kitchen.
Thus, I am going for a counter-depth, freezer on-the-bottom when we renovate. It works best for my space and aside from aesthetics, I am all about function.
For me, the side-by-side is the best option. We need the most cubic feet of space due to 6 people in house, half of whom are huge eaters. If I don't go large, would need to add another small fridge or chest freezer to add enough space, which would run up the utility bills.
I only shop the local appliance stores. They service what they sell here and are extremely prompt about service calls. For something like a fridge, this is a necessity for me. I also look for "scratch and dent" models and my latest has no icemaker or water dispenser - since many people look for those, I got a heckuva deal for being willing to go without one. A Brita pitcher and some ice cube trays work just fine for my crew.
If you consider side by side, check out the different manufacturer's models. I think mine has good space in the fridge section but I've seen others that seem to not make good use of the space.
I have a side by side and really hate it. The freezer side is so narrow you can't even put a boxed pizza in it, without sliding it in on an angle. A large turkey barely fits. I'm currently renting, so I'm stuck with it. Would never buy one if I had the choice.
I bought a standard top-freezer for $600 (on sale from $800) last fall when we bought our house. It cost half of what the cheapest french door model would cost, and is energy-star rated. It is black, not SS, but it does have a decent icemaker. I would hate myself if I had paid a ridiculous amount of money for anything else.
My side by side has a vertical slot alongside of the icemaker where you can put a frozen boxed pizza. I don't use it very often as I'm more likely to freeze individually wrapped slices of regular pizza but I've used a few times.
