Vacuum cleaners - any recommendations
I'm confused. The reviews for Dyson Vacuum are good but the price is prohibitive for a vacuum I think! Then there is Bissel clean home (says its cyclonic)....Does anybody have an opinion if its worth spending that much on a vacuum. We have no pets
Anybody having reliability issues with Dyson?

I don't understand the Dyson hype
The Dyson vacuum cleaner - famous for its bagless technology - is the least reliable of all upright and cylinder brands, a consumer magazine has said
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3688983.stm
I bought a Sebo: http://www.allergybuyersclub.com/all...-cleaners.html I also don't like bagless. That is one reason I wouldn't buy a Dyson.

Im going to have to disagree with my friend who posted above
I have a Dyson DC17 Animal and I absolutely LOVE it. I paid about $450 (usually $550) for it on sale/with coupon. Its worth every single penny, heck its even worth more! You wont believe what this thing picks up! Its super easy to clean.
Ive had it since March, no problems so far. It comes with a 5 yr guarentee.
Since you dont have pets, you might want to check out the All Floors Models. The Slim has great reviews on Amazon.

I have an Electrolux and it is great. You do pay for them, but after 7+ years and a VERY furry dog, we've had no issues whatsoever. I believe they're now called Aerus or something like that, but its the same company.

agreed -
I don't get the hype over Dyson either...if I was going to spend 500+ on a vacuum it would not be a Dyson...perhaps a Miele, Sebo, Electrolux, or even a central vacuum...yes...I dislike bagless as well...they are designed so that they last a very short amount of time...the dust eventually burns out the motor, because the filters can't handle all the debris...who would keep spending $50.00-$100.00 every year or so buying a throw-away vacuum, nevermind the pollution to the landfills with all the plastic they are made of...
I have allergies, so to empty some bin out everytime and spread dust back into the house is crazy...I have posted before...I went with Kenmore, I prefer the canister vacuum over uprights...I paid around $325.00 or $350.00 can't remember...it has a HEPA filter and HEPA Cloth bags...so it is very efficient...I have had no problems with the vacuum...It has the powerhead for carpets and the mini powerhead for stairs, and regular straight suction attachments as well...I love the vacuum...wow did I just say I loved a vacuum? lol...but for the $$ it was worth it...and I didn't break my bank account spending alot of money...at it was rated as a CR (Consumer Reports) Best Buy for canister vacuums...I do have a dog, but he doesn't shed...so I don't have to worry about pet hair...but it was rated excellent in Consumer Reports on all levels...Good Luck!

We bought Dyson pretty early in the Dyson hype (about 5 years ago). Unfortunately, at the time they only came with a 2 or 3 year warranty (I forgot which) and after that, we had a problem that required a $100 repair. Not ridiculous, but still..
However we decided to pay it and keep the Dyson (its on year 2 of the repair now), because I particularly like the fact that there are really no filters to clog. I had a Hoover previously, and having to pull out the paper filter and clean it was terrible. The dyson is much more reliable than that.
I still think the crazy German vacuums ($700+) are fantastic, but it was hard enough for me to spend $399 on a Vacuum, I don't think I could bring myself to spend enough for a really really really high end vacuum.

What do you consider important in a vacuum? Do you have a lot of surface changes? Do you prefer uprights or canisters by enough to prejudice you one way or the other? Allergy issues? Is noise a problem for you? How about weight?
FWIW (and it's not worth too much if you're scared of the price of a Dyson ) I LOVE my Miele. It's quiet, light, quiet, powerful, quiet, very efficient at filtering things out and quiet. Oh, yeah - it's also very quiet. The fact that's it's dealt with up to 10 cats helps too. I think that we've had it now for 6 or 7 years and there's been no cost other than changing belts and bags. Even the cord retractor works every time

I have a Dyson cannister..we bought it back when the Dyson's first came out..It worked fine on barefloors but it is terrible on the carpets!! I needed a light weight vacuum because of back problems but the cannister Dyson wasn't worth the money we paid.
My next Vacuum is going to be a Miele..I have heard nothing but good things about these vacuums. With 2 golden retrievers & a cat plus the family I need a very good vacuum. Yes, they are pricey but they do last a long time..just my opinion .

Clean Freak That I Am
Let' see . . . since being on my own, since college in the late 70s, I have owned almost every type/style vacuum cleaner there's been, and only one ever compared to the DYSON ('animal' model) that I've used for the past two years now. Growing up my parents had a Rainbow that was incredible technology for the time -- no bags, but a chamber filled with water that captured the dirt. You emptied it much like a bagless vacuum, only you poured the dirty water out.
My parents still have the vacuum, and still use it. They bought it when I was a teenager, and that's been almost 40 years ago.
I have owned (2) Hoovers, a Dirt Devil, a Kenmore canister, and various others that I've lost track of, including a Shop Vac or two. I liked the Kenmore for all of the reasons another poster mentioned, but at the time I was vacuuming largely hardwood floors and a few rugs. The Hoovers start out well enough, but seem to lose suction -- even the Wind Tunnel model, which is now relegated to the upstairs.
The DYSON, however, is the only vacuum I have ever owned that got all of the pet hair off the wool rugs in the house. The suction is so strong until it almost lifts the rugs off the hardwood floors. It also gets the dog hair that drifts onto the furniture in the house.
I have truly been impressed with its performance.

I bought the Dyson. Worth every flipping penny and still works like I bought it yesterday (had it for two years) no problems.
