We just bought a house with a gas starter. We rarely used the gas logs we've had before, but after the mess left by the previous owners (I don't think they EVER cleaned the fireplace, though they obviously used it), I highly doubt we will EVER burn real wood. Knowing that we will be selling in a few years, we are considering the idea of having gas logs installed instead. What should I know about ease of installation and resale? Is there something I haven't considered?
ETA, we also have a child with asthma and allergies. I wonder if either option is more likely to trigger any issues with that.

I hated the mess of a real fireplace. We hardly ever used ours. Now we have gas logs and it is a nice way to add a bit of ambiance and warmth without the mess. They make very convincing gas logs now.
Nothing like gas logs. Point, click, instant warmth and atmosphere.
If you HAVE to burn wood, I suppose having the gas starter is a wonderful accoutrement.
But wood is dirty, difficult to deal with (cutting, drying, splitting, stacking or buying), burns poorly and contributes to pollution and stench in the house/neighborhood, and leaves a residual mess (ashes) which must be regularly dealt with. It takes time to build a fire, and requires attention until it dies and cools.
I prefer gas logs, but I'd advise against an electric starter. If your power ever went out you wouldn't be able to use the gas log for heat.
