Check that the valve that feeds INTO the water heater isn't closed off.
Otherwise... call the plumber.

I would try and see if the pilot and burner on the water heater went out. Have you turned off the gas main to the house at any time and forgot to relight the water heater. Could be a bad gas control valve on the WH itself. But check the burner first.

Towards the bottom of the water heater base you'll see a metal cover that is removable. There will be some gas lines going in and the cover protects/covers the lines. Pull the cover and get down and peek inside. You should see a pilot light ( small gas flame) and a burner lit (big gas flame). If pilot is on and burner is off then attempt to relight the water heater. Instructions on the procedure are written on the side of the unit. If it won't relight you may need a new gas valve.

If neither are lit ( pilot or burner) make sure gas valve is on and then relight pilot and burner.

Also check as Mr Rational said. Have you had a water heater replaced lately?

And if it is an electric water heater, check to make sure the circuit breaker hasn't kicked off (or fuse blown if it is an old electrical installation).
