that some of the absolute pickiest buyers are the ones with the smallest budget???
They MUST have:
granite counters
SS appliances
hardwood floors
master retreat to rival a 5 star hotel
awesome curb appeal
large backyard with privacy
great school district
and their budget is like, $120k, for a suburb of DC. Yeah, good luck with that!
This show is so goofy and scripted. I still watch because I enjoy seeing house decor/style/prices in other parts of the country. But I really like the Property Virgins show with the host named Egypt. It's a little more realistic and gets into the details of making the offer, etc. And sometimes the buyers totally back out and decide to put their house hunt on hold. Much more realistic, IMO.

I like house hunters, but sometimes I think the people can not see the potential of a home, they just notice the small stuff, such as painting, easily fixable.
I have noticed that they edit the programs, so the home they criticize the most, is probably the one they get at the end.
We have black appliances now and I really love the way it looks. We have refrigerator, cooktop, and built-in oven, microwave and dishwasher all in black, and sink is also black porcelain. I was considering going with stainless steel when we replace everything, but now you have me reconsidering. They do have that brushed stainless steel that doesn't show fingerprints.
Anyway, the main reason we want to go from black is just what you mention - it's hard to keep it looking clean, especially the cooktop. I don't know exactly what it's made from, but cooked on food just doesn't come off. I have even tried oven cleaner. It looks fine with normal kitchen lights, but if you turn on the range light it looks horrible. The dishwasher gets white hard water stains on the outside at the bottom. The other appliances aren't that bad to keep clean.
If you really like stainless steel go for it. It IS nice looking. I admit I am somewhat anal about streaks. I hate streaks...on windows OR appliances. So I want something that looks nice when I'm done.
I know it's scripted but still find myself watching for lolz.
The thing that gets irritating is the ad nauseum "I must have stainless steel appliances, granite counters, and hardwood floors". Seriously, are people sheep or something? Please don't tell me that everyone, or mostly everyone, must have all three of those things. I see nothing wrong with other types of appliances, hardwood floors were never a dealbreaker for me, and I do not like granite countertops.
Hardwoods or a hardwood allowance is a must for me due to allergies. I personally like black appliances because they don't show finger prints. I could care less about counters.
I will be buying a new home in the next few years, for me watching HH and other house porn lets me see a variety of styles, conditions and designs. I've been able to see what I like, what I don't like and how to visualize possible changes. I know that its scripted and that the prices used on rehab shows are not factual in all parts of the country. Despite all that its an easy way to begin my house hunting education.
They want a ton of windows for "lots of natural light". As opposed to what? Unnatural light?
You should see the cave I live in. My husband bought it without even seeing it (but for good reason) years before we even met. I NEVER lived in such a dark place. Even bright sunny days look like the cloudiest for all you can tell in here. (You have to press your head against the glass to get a glimpse of sky!)
It doesn't help that he painted it in very dark colours. I feel depressed even with constant light from special full spectrum bulbs and such.
Thankfully we are moving soon. I am certain I remarked gleefully about all the natural light in the house we are buying. Windows! Skylights! Glass sliding doors! Natural liiiiiiight!! None of which are blocked by neighbouring NYC high rises like the cave, I mean flat.
Another thing that cracks me up is the budgets of some of these people. They want to buy a house that is 600,000, but when they open a wall and see something that needs to be fixed, they complain because they don't have the 500 bucks to fix it, but then have no problem buying that 3000 dollar fridge.
I love the people who are like, "It's a deal breaker if the appliances are not stainless". Do they not know that buying new appliances is the easiest thing that can do in terms of "renovating"? They will be stumped when the appliance wears out and needs to be replaced. They may have to buy a new house when that happens.
Personally, I would love to move into a house that hadn't been updated since the 40s and had a 40s appliances in the kitchen. And speaking of Elmira appliances, if I spent $5000 on a stove from them, you would bet I'd take that with me when I moved!

Do they not know that a stainless-faced appliance works no more efficiently than any other color?
