A few months into living there we find out that owners husband got very depressed at one point and went up stairs drank a lot of beer and played some pool on the big pool table up there and blew his brains out. The widow left it as is up there, boarded it up and rented it out.
Houses have some sort of "memory energy," and I've experienced it myself.
I'm an architectural historian and years ago, I was exploring in a small town in southwestern Illinois. I found an old modest bungalow in terrible shape and it had been abandoned and boarded up. There were a few "no trespassing" signs around, but hey - I was doing research!
As soon as I crossed the threshold, I felt a dark, heavy mantle of despair drop around me and sink down into the depths of my very soul. There's no describing it, but it was a combination of deep mourning and soul-crushing sadness. Almost felt like I couldn't breathe.
I took a cursory glance at the first floor rooms and then skedaddled out of there. I exited the house and before I could reach my car, a neighbor came up to me and GRILLED me on my reasons for crossing a no trespassing sign.
We talked and she told me, "You shouldn't be in there. It was the site of a murder/suicide three years ago. Young man went crazy, dragged his wife to the basement, tied her up and killed her, and then he killed himself."
My house is unique because it was custom-built in 1962, and we bought it from the original owner's estate. The kitchen and bath (and other rooms) were 100% original and that's what made me fall in love. Walking into the house is like stepping back into 1962.
The couple who built the house took excellent care of it, and even many of the light fixtures are original.
LOVE my 1960s formica countertops!
That is an awesome looking house! You don't know how lucky you are it wasn't "updated" by some fool who watches too much HGTV. You should check out Retro Renovation if you need to to any restoration.
My house is so "unique" that I almost couldn't get a loan. It took two appraisals and who knows how many banks. The most unique feature is the radiant heat built into the ceiling plaster. It also has two large 15' tall ducts in the atrium which go to a rock bed about 20' underground. They have fans that suck the hot air from the ceiling area, circulate it underground and blow the cool air from the floor. There are also "trapdoors" along the top of my cathedral ceiling which connect to rooftop turbines that pull the hot air out in the summer.
I also have what I call the "70's porn shower" which is half wood, half yellow tile and has seating for 4 people. It looks like a Swedish sauna.

I was lucky in that I did not listen to friends and family when I bought my second home from the original owner that bought it new in 1922... she and her husband never had children and the home was neglected from her advanced age and like going back in time.
All I did was repair and refinish and when it came time to sell... I got the highest price ever at that time because it was unmolested... some of my neighbors homes had suffered "Upgrades" and needed them again!

Nothing really unique about our home, its a 1970's do-over of a much older cottage. We have 2 rooflines, one is what you see from the outside the other is the roof to the original cottage which is visible when you look up into the attic space.
One thing that is maybe a little unique is the extra large garage attached to the house, its over 1200sq ft and has a fully useable oil change/inspection pit.
