A lot of times a fireplace in the living room takes up a wall that would otherwise be best for a tv. For those of you who've put a big screen tv above their fireplace - how did that end up working for you?

I'm afraid the height will be too much so it won't be comfortable viewing without getting a crick in your neck. How about furniture placement and distance from the fireplace/tv - was that difficult in terms of having to keep a certain distance from the heat of the fire?

We had one there before and frankly we were craning out necks. We all hated it. When we moved to MT we installed our t.v. in our family room using a wall mount and followed Sony's recommendation- The middle of the screen is basically at our head level while seated and it is perfect.

I'm not a fan aesthetically (think it looks very, Very bad), especially when you realize that it's a building fad based on the styles of older homes where the fireplace was the center-place of the room. But I have a 1930's built home, my options are over the fireplace, blocking a door or blocking a window (seriously, I have 4 door, 2 of which are double/fench, and 6 full sized windows in this room), so I opted for over the fireplace. The height is bad, but with a downward-tilting mount, it's not "crick in the neck" bad.

My fireplace is decorative (originally a coal burner), so no help on the heat issue just yet. Plans are to put a gas insert in there Sometime, but we can just turn it off should things get too warm.

If you have Any other option for the TV, I'd take it. Use the fireplace as a center-point and put the TV in a different room, or in a different Section of that room.

Personally I don't like it at all.

But I don't care for fireplaces unless you live in a cold climate that it's necessary.

Here in Florida I think they are just stupid.

I had mine above the fireplace and as the article said, our necks were sore from looking up at it. Also the picture always looked better while standing up. My fireplace is in a corner and it had an alcove above it for the TV. I was able to move the TV to the wall alongside the fireplace. I put the TV stand type thing. Rearranged the furniture and now much more pleased.

Temporarily filled the TV alcove above the fireplace with a large artificial plant and a couple of small statues. Been considering a large mirror or painting to cover the alcove hole but just have not gotten around to doing it.

2 reasons why I don't put a TV over the fireplace. 1- the heat is bad on the electronics, 2- smoke residue buildup is bad for the electronic circuits.

We just put ours above the fireplace despite what I've read. Our furniture seems to be back far enough that you don't get neck pain. I can see how that could happen if it were closer. I'll keep you all updated.

its an ugly trend that people will say WTF were we thinking of, 10 years from now.

I rather lose the FP and have the TV. In most home the FP is totally un necessary and takes up valueable wall space.
