I've heard that hanging old CDs from strings scares birds away. The shiny side scares them off.
I just read that from another source also and will give it a try. There's always fresh poop afterward so they are definitely hanging around "sunbathing" too.
My next door neighbor did put up a bird feeder at their front door many months back. Are these birds hanging out on my stoop with their food ? Do they even do that?
I'm not about to invite more over with a feeder of my own.
Doves don't carry their food elsewhere. They eat it right where they find it. As other posters have said they're either eating the grit, or enjoying the warmth of your stoop.
Within the last month or so I've been getting a flock of birds on my stoop making a big pooping mess. They're just hanging around and also seemingly pecking between my paver brick. Is that a source of food or something? It's not pure sand but a rubbery substance at this point. Not sure why now and not before. I normally wouldn't care but this is my front stoop and they're really making a nasty mess. I heard fake owls don't really work either.
Stop by at one of those discount 99cent store, family dollar, or $dollar stores and look for a small stuffed animal that looks like a cat in the toy section. I was able to find several teddy bears a while back that “look like” a cat. I have them in the backyard trees to help keep some birds away that are causing problems….. It works, just move the stuffed animal around every few days in a different location on your front porch. The birds will think it’s a cat or an animal that could harm them and they might stay away.
They make a very unique sound and I always see them in groups. In my experience, they prefer being on the ground during the day - so if your stoop gets a lot of sun, it's very inviting to them
We had a similar problem on our front porch. We hung a wind chime in the open bay between the pillars (similar to yours) The combination of the shiny metal tubes and the chiming seems to have done the trick.

The mourning doves calls in TX used to drive me nuts. I would lie there in bed listening and trying to figure out what they sounded like. I finally settled on" hip hip hooray". After that, listening to birds saying hip hip hooray for hours on end drove me even more nuts. Good grief, I was a nut case.
