of the thousands and thousands of CREE LR6 can trims we've sold and installed, i've yet to hear anyone say they "look dimmer", and that's because they're not. that is also the difference between a $75 LED trim and a $15 LED trim.

you get what you pay for. and you can also get whatever color temp you desire.

So it looks like I'll be going with deep cans. I wanted to avoid these since they're deeper than the rafters on the top floor, but that seems to be the only way to get good 'down' light.
I don't know which brand of integrated LED you bought, but the Cree LR6 downlights you can buy from Home Depot for $20 a piece are outstanding. I have them in every recessed can in my house. The light source is around 2 inches recessed into the trim body, and I have never had an issue with glare.

For those of us in cold climates, these integrated trims can also stop airflow into the attic, reducing issues with ice dams and attic condensation.

Light output on the $17 trim is actually fine in my case. It's putting off as much light as the two 13 watt CFLs that were in the surface mount fixture in the test location. Color temperature is good too. The test area has warm hued cork floors and wood trim, all of which look very good in this light, much better than the soft white CFLs, and almost as good as the halogen work light.

LED hands down. I have been replacing my cans with the LED retrofit kits from Home Depot. One LED can seems brighter than about 4 of the regular cans. Not only do they come with a 5 year warranty, but they use less energy and the light output is much more natural, sort of like the old Reveal light bulbs...a much whiter light. Really makes everything stand out. They are pricey to do all at once so I have just been swapping them out as the old can lights burn out.
