Any kid (6yoa or not) is "capable" of doing just about anything!
What makes the difference is how they're raised!
We purchased our house with open foyer and open 2nd floor when my kids were 2 and 3. Never look at it as a safety issue. House with a pool? Now that was always off the list while house hunting.
While a six-year-old is old enough to avoid jumping over the railing, sliding down the bannister is a time-honored juvenile occupation which might seem tempting, given your description. Is there a newel post or some other means of stopping the slider(s) at the bottom of the bannister? Would it be possible for centrifugal force to cause the slider to prematurely depart from the curved bannister, half-way or less down?
