We moved into a new 2 acre property... about one acre is lawn.
I bought a tractor and mow it myself. I dont go crazy with edging every week, but I do mow it (Apr-Oct)
Anyway, I value my time and I did the math. Maybe the math is why I bought a tractor last year when we had just moved in.
But the kicker is, I actually enjoy it. Grab a beer and just motor around. No one is gonna bug me. Just drive an mow. Blocked out of the world.... its actually relaxing.
I debated this with coworker friends several times. Most saying pay someone, but my kids are older and I have more free time then the young guys. So again, I enjoy mowing
now in a couple years when I am tired of spending the time, I can always hire someone and feel that the mower purchases wasnt a waste
I cut one acre which is size of my lawn. My zero turn takes me 45 minutes to just cut. Ours is a lawn not a field ;so we cut in warm months weekly. But then there you also deal with snow removal and we don't. I do not mind mowing at all and enjoy the outdoors myself.
Our next door neighbor was in her mid to late 80s and still mowing her lawn. And my dad mowed his lawn till about a week before he died at almost 82. If they can handle it, I think you (OP) can.
We have an acre of lawn on our 5 acre place. Our housekeepers son mowed it last year and but he has full time job now when not in school, and she has asked if she can do it this year. We supply the John Deere tractor mower which is easy enough a 5'2" little woman can drive it. In my 80s, and it is no longer pleasant for me to do it, so we let someone else mow it with our equipment.
Wow. I can't imagine paying that for something you can do yourself. After the initial cost of equipment you could be pocketing that money for other things. I would say that you would break even the first year and then the first month of every year after if you bought a riding mower.
I've been paying the same person to care for my lawn for 16 years (which involves a lot of equipment, and a lot of work, also, depending on the season or weather). When I moved in, he was doing my then-neighbor's lawn, so I snagged him and referred him to a few friends. He's very dependable, has to drive a bit of a distance to get here, and is well worth it.
I pay him from $30 to $50, depending on what he does. Often, the back yard does not need anything because I have so many trees, I have very little "lawn" to speak of!
There's no satisfaction like a job well done by someone who knows what he's doing. I'd be a total idiot out there. He sees small things and is very precise. I also send him a slightly hefty check in his Christmas card every year.
