This is my first time posting a picture so I hope this works. I just wadded up 3 paper towels inside the rage to make it into a ball. Used a rubber band to hold the cloth in place. I mix the poly & paint thinner in a glass bowl. You then just dip the applicator in the mixture and apply it to the wood.

Just remember long continuous strokes on the wood.

Here is my stained dresser - should I just makeup a smaller type rag since the wood planks are smaller?

You can use the exact same size applicator. It doesn't get heavily loaded up like a brush so you don't have as many issues with it running. The other thing is you're just lightly touching the applicator to the wood and not pressing down so you don't get run off if you're worried about that.
