Hi, I might be getting a "friend of a friend" to replace a toilet and a vanity sink for me. Just curious. If I buy the products (the toilet and vanity), what do you think the approximate price should be for the work (separately please). Also how long each task might take. I realize it depends on circumstances, but just want a general idea and thought if there were any plumbers here they would know.
Thanks!
Had an issue earlier this year that meant having to reinstall my toilet and vanity. I can't remember the exact costs, but I do know that hiring a handyman rather than a plumber saved me hundreds of dollars. I would avoid hiring a plumber unless you really have to.
You should pay by the hour - what the person wants.
And if buying the toilet/vanity, BE AWARE that the toilet sewer connection in the floor can be different lengths from the wall (if you live in an old house).
And the hot/cold water connections and drain for the vanity/sink may work just fine for one vanity, but will be in the way of drawers in another vanity. So the opening in the back needs to line up with where those connections are - make sure there is not a drawer that wants to slide in right where a pipe will need to go!
I used a handyman to replace the toilets in my house. It took him a few hours to do all of them but still a lot cheaper than a plumber would have been. I paid by the hour.
Toilets are a breeze to replace.
The vanity can be a little more difficult - depending on a lot of things.
By all means - replace all your water lines from the supply to the toilet or sink to the source.
Even if they look new, replace them - and, if they're Polybutylene - CHECK ALL SUPPLY LINES IN THE HOUSE!
That stuff's garbage!
