The best security is deterrents. Which not only is a security/alarm system, but video, lighting, well manicured shrubs and trees, window coverings, etc., etc.-
The more deterrents, the more likely they (would be thieves) will go to another home.
Not necessarily, if you have something they want they will find a way around it. I've had friends who's homes were broken into and they had alarms cut and locks broken and the thieves knew exactly where the safes and items were hidden. There are professional thieves out there.
Having good neighbors is a good thing, if you have retired neighbors that's always outside the thieves are not gonna target you as much.
A lot of rich people live in such secluded homes, it makes it really easy for thieves to stake out the area and take their time to break in.
I think it does serve as a deterrent...but with all the "cool" add-ons to digitally see all that's going on in your house it becomes a toy for the guy who can then justify it as a security measure.
The video and remote features from phone have been the most useful to me.
Our solution, is to live in an area where home burglars are virtually unknown. Where police blotters for the week list no home burglaries in the whole county week after week.
Back in the late 90's, my neighbor and I both had ADT with monitoring. Every now and then, he'd trip his alarm just to see how the response (by ADT) worked. It was not uncommon for ADT to call his home at least 10-15 minutes past the time he entered the house. Burglars would be looong gone by the time the cops were ever called.
We've never looked at using ADT again in any of our houses. Now it's just a loud local alarm, great neighbors, and that's about it.
Is a home video camera usually able to catch the a shot of the perp? Unless you have a bunch of cameras at different places in the house, wouldn't you have to guess where the perp will be?
We've had them for several years. Fast response. Price went up a little but still under $12/mth. We pay yearly.
We also get a call from them if the power goes out.

So far as being alerted that there was a power outage... That could be a *very* good thing to know about!
We had a situation where the power was out for 2 days, then came back on. And my neighbors were away the entire time - did not know the power was out. I was able to warn them to NOT eat anything from their refrigerator, as it would have gotten warm, then cold again when the power came back on.
The grocery stores in the area will throw away all their refrigerated food if the electricity is off (refrigeration) for longer than 4 hours or so.
I'm surprised no one mentioned the big value - Pushing a potential burglar to another house without a security system. One local company actually uses that concept in their ads.
Of course having signs or stickers saying you have a security system may also advertise the fact that you have something worth taking :-)

Where the big-screen television is, at some point in time.
