Nothing makes a prettier curtain than the lowest thread count white sheet you can find - I'm talking 180 here. They are rough and coarse - when the sun shines through that texture, it's subtly beautiful, like linen.
I also make duvet covers from thrift store sheets.
As HedgehogMum said, put a lining of white sheets behind the colored ones. They'll look much nicer from the street and they won't fade on the inside. Sheets are just like buying fabric except they are much wider.
My mom did this and it looked good---and she hates sewing! I didn't even know they were sheets until she told me but the pattern could have worked for either.
Making kitchen curtains is on my "to do" list at the moment. I did get fabric for the actual curtains since there was some at the quilt store that is an exact match for the Formica counter tops in the kitchen. At $13 a yard! I think this is the most expensive fabric (per yard, anyway) that I've bought in decades. Fortunately it is more of a colorful ruffle than an actual curtain. But, white sheets will be used for the curtain backing. If I could have found sheets the same color as the counter top, I would have used them in a heart beat. Especially used sheets from a thrift shop.
Sheets are a great for curtains! Cheap and durable!
Years ago when I lived in Albany, I rented an apartment in a 1913 brick townhouse that had 96-inch windows, leading to the creation of "Linda's classy curtains" since I wasn't investing significant $$$ in curtains for a rental. My curtains were two flat, single sheets for each tall window purchased on sale at Macy's for like $5/each and tied back with lengths of grosgrain ribbon. I think just sewed a rod pocket at the bottom hem so the larger hem hung at the floor. They did look very classy in my place both inside and out, and when I moved, they worked well enough in my new house until I bought regular curtains/drapes. Then I donated them to a friend who was living in a temporary rental after a fire in her house. She later sent them off with one of her kids who was furnishing her own first apartment ...
I am thinking of making a new generation of "Linda's classy curtains" for my sunroom since the windows there are long and narrow and there's five of them.
I have also used the sheets for making extra pillow cases. Many uses for used sheets found at a thrift store or yard sales.
