When I lived in Europe, every shower I saw had a detachable head. In every house, apartment, or hotel I spent the night.

Which is far superior, because you can clean out all your cracks and crevices.

Is there any reason why somebody would prefer a showerhead fixed to the wall that doesn't move, if given a choice?

Having a regular showerhead fixed to the wall is standard here but the detachable ones are inexpensive and easy to install. I always used to install one when I moved into an apartment, and I'd take it with me when I moved out.

I think the reason they're not standard here is because they're a little more expensive than a basic showerhead, or maybe because it's sort of a personal care item and some people might be grossed out thinking of where it might have been before, especially in a hotel.

We always install detachable ones in our houses. I think fixed is standard because they break much, much less often.

We have two shower heads; one that is fixed and one that is on a sliding bar. This is because I am disabled and use a shower seat, but my DH loves having both going at the same time.

They are inexpensive and easy to install (if you want the sliding bar you may want to hire a handyman since it needs to be screwed into the shower surround.

What does the fixed showerhead have to do with health & wellness? There is a house forum.

Fixed are cheaper and they leak less because a hose can leak on both ends.

Well, it probably started with the "Virginia Stool Shower". With the showerhead in a fixed position I can see why the "trend" continued...

I have the head on a hose set up in my shower, and the ONLY time it comes unclipped is when I'm cleaning the shower - I find it's easier to rinse parts of the shower down when I have a hose set up already in there. Otherwise I'd be just fine with a fixed shower head...I find I can still move in a shower and position my body within the flow of water, lol.

Now, if I was mobility impaired for whatever reason, I can see where having the head on a hose would be handy....
