I agree with others, OP. The fireplace as it is, is in keeping with the style of the house. The traditional mantle you intend to put there would look out of place.
We are almost done with the fireplace. I just have to install an electrical outlet for the TV, paint the inside with fireplace black paint and put in blue fireplace glass inside.

Sweet~ This was way better than the mantel you were thinking in your first post! The mantel made me think old folks home, I'm old lol... So I can say that...
OK, here is the completed fireplace with everything in place in the living room. This picture was taken 3 months ago. The electrical outlet is for the TV. I will not have cable so the TV will connect to the internet wirelessly. I will put a leaf antenna behind the TV for local channels. Total cost was almost $1500. Most expensive was the granite slab and cost to cut and fit it in.
Just saw this thread today and as a mason and builder of fireplaces for many years I say Bravo! And kudos too for working through this unusual issue, taking in lots of advice and coming up with such a great solution. I was really wondering about that overhanging layer of bricks - why it was built like that, what it covers.
Your guy came up with the right solution. extend the "popout" down to the floor effectively pulling the fireplace front forward 4'yet actually making it appear less imposing. And the venetian plaster looks great!
Also much thanks for coming back with pictures of the finished job.
