Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a property with a house. The house has a lot of stuff in it, tons of stuff. The ceiling tiles are falling down in the garage and I'm curious if they are asbestos tiles. We are in the process of sorting through the stuff in the house and I'd really like it to be safe. I know the best solution is to get them tested but I'm curious if anyone knows anything about these tiles. House was built in 1976 I believe and I don't know if it is the original ceiling, but I assume it is. It is some sort of glue on, tongue and groove ceiling tile, about 12"x12" although I haven't measured yet.

Thanks in advance for any info!

They look like regular cellulose tiles to me. The house might have been built in 1976, but I'll bet those tiles were installed by the owner at a later date. I doubt any builder would use that product in a garage application.

That's a good point, the tiles are falling down in the garage but nowhere else, probably a sign they weren't meant for garage weather. Thanks for the input!

Looks like some of the old Celotex ceiling tile from the 70's. If the finish has what feels like a kinda plastic finish, it's the Celotex brand tile and is made from sugar cane out of S America.
