So we are looking to buy new kitchen appliances, new stove and refrigerator.

We have already picked out the fridge, but im very torn about the stove.

We currently have natural gas, but the wife wants to convert to electric due to the ease of cleaning, and the duel oven feature. I have been reading a lot of "horror" stories about glass top electric stoves dues to cracking and shattering.

Are they as fragile as people are saying, or are they pretty durable, also am i totally crazy going from natural gas to electric?

Our glass top stove is 17 years old with nary a scratch on the top. Of course, that's not to say today's crap will hold up that long. Did you make sure you have enough amperage left in your breaker box for an electric stove? You might wanna check that before making the final decision.

I have 200 amp service and only topped out at 120 amps, so i should be fine adding a 40 amp circuit for the stove.

I have a glass top electric range and would never go back to gas. I like to bake, and electric ovens allow for much more accurate temperatures.

I've had my glass top range of nearly ten years and have no problem with it. My step-mother had a glass top electric range for years, too.

I do have natural gas for heating and hotwater. I will likely switch my drier to gas when I remodel the laundry, but I love my electric range.

Default Many choices

Look at dual fuel ranges.
Ajmadison.com is a useful site for seeing many brands/models.

As a former personal chef who has cooked on a lot of stoves, an electric range would be a deal-breaker for me in purchasing a new house unless I could convert it to a gas one. But I'm all about control of the heat and you can do that much better with gas than electric and that's not an issue for some folks.

Dont buy a glass top with a pattern. It will wear off.

This might help.

We bought this one.

30" Freestanding Electric Flex Duo ® Oven & Electric Range (Black Stainless Steel) | Samsung

Originally was going to buy this

30" Freestanding Gas Flex Duo ® Oven & Gas Range (Black Stainless Steel) | Samsung

Best of both worlds, minus cost

NY58J9850WS Dual Fuel Range with Flex Duo and Dual Door

Wife REALLY wants the dual oven that has the convertible 2 door, but its only available in electric. The gas/electric combo would be perfect, but the price is WAY up there. So we got the full electric.

Im just worried about long term durability, ive read a lot of sites, but looking for "honest" answers from forum members, instead of corporate reviews.

We have had both gas and electric stoves (in different homes).

Electric is costly to use, slow to heat up, and very slow to cool down.

No real issues with the cook top - it does scratch when you put a plate or a casserole dish on it and move it around, we try to put a paper towel under it. Cleaning it requires some care with cleansers for this purpose, at times careful scraping with a razor blade is required.

I would never spend money to convert to an electric stove. We wish we had natural gas.

If you are using AJ Madison - check the reviews in Yelp - while their prices and selection are great, their service is horrible! Don't ask me how I know.
