the HoA wont allow the more wire fences unforutunately....and the problem with trees is that we cannot have somehting that overtakes our septic fields ....so if its trees we need to the types that not only provide good privacy but the roots dont grow too far out from the trees.


we are 1.5 hr from NYC so its cold

A suggestion: if you only want 6 feet or so in height and a smaller root area, you should be looking at shrubs instead of trees.

I've got a hedge of rhododendrons between my house and traffic noise. You can get rhodies in all sorts of different heights. There are varieties that stay short and there are varieties that grow into trees, and all sorts of heights inbween. I think they look nice and they have that bonus of a stunning floral display in the spring.
