There's an easy way to "test" granite to see if it needs to be sealed, something to do with a paper towel and hot water (I did it when I first moved into my current house, showed every sign of needing to be sealed, so I did and then re-tested and it showed every sign of not needing to be sealed). I'm sure a little searching will turn it up if you're interested... Since it takes less than 5 minutes to do all of my granite surfaces (3'x10' island and about 15' of normal counters), I just do it when prepping for our annual X-mas brunch party. I think the under $20 bottle of sealer I bought will last a decade or more too....

I didn't know Mother Nature made granite in "contractor grade".
I will clarify: I chose granite that has a 15 year no seal warranty as it was sealed before installation. All of the warehouses that my fabricator worked with offered this 15 year warranty on all granite EXCEPT contractor grade granites, which were not presealed.

So no need to do the annual sealing. In fact, if the homeowner seals the counters it will void the warranty. The warranty is fully transferable as well.
