How often does everyone change out the washing machine hoses? I have rubber hoses that were installed prior to purchasing the house. Hard to say how old they are but I owned the house for 2 years. I've read that you need to change out hoses every 5 years and the braided steel ones are recommended. Any particular braided steel brands that are recommended?

I have had lots of trouble with washing machines but never with those hoses. I never changed one.

The IBHS (Institute for Business and Home Safety) conducted a study and analyzed 525 washing machine claims from multiple insurance companies. Of all water damage claims related to washing machines, more than half – nearly 55% – are from water supply hoses that leaked or burst. These materials lose resiliency as they age, making them subject to cracks, leaks, and bursting. The IBHS study showed that failure rates increase dramatically in hoses that are more than five years old; the average age of failed hoses was 8.7 years. More than half of all failures occurred by the time the machine and its hoses were eight years old, and nearly 80% occurred before ten years.

Get the metal braided ones. I always keep my water valves turned off anyway when I am not doing laundry.

When I re-piped I added a spring loaded valve for the washer.
Now the hoses never have pressure except for the hour or so the laundry is being done.

I like the idea of this in general. But you are really just adding more failure points. And since things are made so poorly these days - especially if it comes from China, this will probably fail and leak before a simple hose would.

Just get a quality hose and don't worry about the consequences... My hoses are 22 years old now (I should think about changing them soon).

Nope. You have the same solder joint and hose end points as with any valve.

Solid brass, well machined. Money well spent.

I can appreciate the view as I used to feel the same way.

But since things like hoses are made so poorly these days - especially if it comes from China -
I calculate that a bit of extra insurance is worth it.

Glad I read the thread. I know my hose (washer only uses one) is way more than 5 years old.
