Some years ago my wife and I lived in Orange Country NY, on a pretty large parcel of land (all our neighbors had pretty large lots). A wind storm came up and a tree fell on my neighbors house. The next morning after the storm I brought my chain saw over to his house, another two neighbors showed up and we managed to remove the offending tree in short order.
I moved to SW TN from Staten Island. You're right, NYers wouldn't even think of helping out a neighbor. But you're not in Queens anymore. You're in the south.
We've had 3 tornadoes hit our area since we moved - and each time, those affected had more immediate assistance than they could use - not just water and food, but backhoes, tractors, and strong backs and arms to help.

That's what neighbors do.

Yes, that's exactly what neighbors do. That's why greeting someone with the words "hi, neighbor" is such a friendly thing to do.
Okay, maybe I should be appreciative instead of annoyed, lol! I'm a native New Yorker; I was born and raised in Queens and lived in New York for more than four decades. This sort of thing wouldn't happen in New York! So since I'm currently living in NC, I'll have to adjust my way of thinking. I'll be sure my husband has a friendly chat with our neighbor, although I don't necessarily feel like we owe him a gift.
You can always take the girl outta Queens; but you can't take the Queens outta the girl!
Reminds me of the transplants I'd have to deal with when they came to the ATL- long story short- I can't remember how many times I said "you're not in " "; and we don't do it that way here.
