Any comments on aluminum fences would be greatly appreciated. Did a search and read a whole bunch of threads but couldn't find or missed the comments.

We have moved to our "heaven on earth" retirement spot and want to reduce the total maintenance we have to do. At present, the sections of fence we want to replace are a stained picket style which works nicely with the house. But it will be time to redo this next spring.

The aluminum fence seems to be used frequently here by govt(local and fed), and looks good. It also needs to be able to withstand harsh(but glorious) winters. We are thinking we want a "wrought iron" style look but not sure about the winter issues.

Thanks much.

We have a powder coated aluminum fence of the 'wrought iron" style, that has been maintenance free and still looks great 7 years after install. So far, it is all we hoped for. We even had a tree fall on one section of it, and while the top horizontal bar is slightly bent, it held up much better than i would have expected.

Not sure how much the quality varies between the manufacturers.

Yep- powdercoated aluminum is probably the best non/low maintenance fence you could install. It's also the most likely fence to be STOLEN.

Take your pick:

Low maintenance/high scrap value
High maintenance/no scrap value

Neighbors have aluminum fence. It does not rust but snow was deformed it several spots. This is simply because of the properties of aluminum -- it bends far more easily than iron. Stacking even hand shoveled snow drifts against the fence is going to deform it.

Agree with the comments on powder coated aluminum.

I've never done a comparison of vinyl fencing options - is it price comparable?

Thanks for the info. What do you think would be a "good" way to gauge quality product? I'm guessing thickness of metal.

There is not much scrap value for any metal up here as it has to be hauled away. The local dump will accept it, but not give you any cash for any metal. I think Iron Mtn 200 miles away is the closest place that takes scrap from dumps etc.

The snow drifts could be a problem as on average we will get 20ish feet of snow. Once it sticks it doesn't go away until at the very very earliest the end of March/first part of April. And we don't even live in the major part of the snow belt.
