2.5 car "Garage Mahal" has 2 cars, 3 motorcycles, and several chain saws in it. 2 car converted barn has 2 cars in it. (Built on to the barn) Awning for my old Chevy has the Chevy in it. Built on garage with no door has the Subaru in it. Purpose-built slab with roof above has my 75 F-350 in it. Machine shed has the 1954 IH Super-C tractor in it, along with several implements for the tractor. Wood shed (with 60 amp capable 115/220 service and a light bulb for night time wood runs) has Troy Bilt tiller, leaf vac/chipper, and 5.5 HP lawn mower in it.
There is plenty of clutter in all of these, but getting the design number of vehicles/equipment in out of the weather is a non-negotiable requirement I impose on myself.
I have a 2 car garage but I'm a 1-adult, 1-kid family so I never intended for there to be more than one car in there. I fully intended to use my garage for a lot of storage, including the overflow from my kitchen and the rest of the main floor because there is limited storage in my open floor plan. I have several of those commercial kitchen wire shelving units that hold my small appliances, large cookware, serving pieces, etc. and when I am cooking in larger quantities, I prop open the door to the garage, and it serves as an extension of my kitchen. I wouldn't have bought this house if I were married/partnered, as I don't think it would work very well for more people but it's perfect for my son and me. He will likely get a car himself in a few years when he's old enough and he'll have to deal with digging it out of snow - a reasonable trade off for a teen owning a car IMO.
Mine can easily hold six Smart cars. But in reality, it holds my pickup and a sedan. But it is 25.5 ft deep on one side and 23.5 ft deep on the other, so it can hold plenty of other stuff.
I have a Mazda 3. It does fit inside the garage, if I don't want to shut the garage door. Also, the doors cannot be opened wide enough to exit the car. To get out of the car I'd have to go through the sunroof, slide down the back hatch window, and out the garage door. Same with the spouse's Hyundai Accent. Maybe a Honda Fit or a SmartCar would work in there.
Small 2 car garage fits our 2 sedans, with room left to spare. I don't have much "stuff", just a lawnmower and a few yard tools.
My parents have a huge 3 car garage (over 1000 square feet), that is configured for 3 cars plus lots of extra room between and around the edges. They can barely fit their 3 cars in it. They have stuff out the wazoo.
My sister has a large 3 car garage, but not as large as the parents, and they have their 2 cars, plus 2 motorcycles, with a ton of room to spare. Their garage always looks really empty to me, especially after visiting mom and dad.
We managed to fit 2 cars, a restored Farmall Cub, my motorcycle, workbench, tools and gear in our attached 3 car garage. That space is insulated and heated.
Part of the reason to build the detached shop is to put all of the tools, gear, tractors, boat and kayaks in there, plus one car, and then use a portion of the attached garage into the gym, moving that stuff out of the family room.
So we will be able to fit two cars and have space to workout (comfortably) in our attached garage.
2 car garage. 1 car, my motorcycle, and "stuff" are in it.
My vehicle is too big to fit in there, so no great loss.
