I'm selling a house that had an oversized three car garage. In the garage were an SUV, and Corvette, and a small convertible, as well as 6 bikes, a Christmas tree, three bags of golf clubs, and all sorts of stuff. My daughter commented that when we got a new house with a real garage, we were going to have trouble parking as in normal garages you need to park straight.
Well here we are in a new house, with a two car garage, holding an SUV and a golf cart, and three bikes, and two set of clubs. It should be an easy fit, and yet...
Our house has a 2-car garage that really only fits one. You can technically get 2 cars in there, but if you want to actually comfortably open a door and get in or out, it's a struggle. This size garage is standard where I live, and I'll never understand it.
We ran across something similar last year when looking for a new house. The garage was only 19 feet deep, which means most pickups wouldn't fit. Which is ridiculous in Alaska, where most buyers in that price range will have a full size pickup. The house we did buy has a garage that is 25.5' deep on one side and 23.5' deep on the other. And there is plenty of room to open doors without hitting the wall or the other vehicle. And I have room for a lawn mower and other things up front. The builder told me he won't build a garage that can't hold his truck. And he has a crew cab pickup with an eight foot bed.
Well my car is 4 inches wider and the doors are the wide part, unlike the 1924 car, which have the tires as the widest part....it's confirmed the older cars are slimmer...
No garage. No basement either, and only 2 closets in the house. I collect NO clutter. I am actually "clutterphobic" and my motto is "if in doubt, throw it out." Unfortunately, the rest of the family seems to have the motto, "Wow! Look what I found on sale at the store!"
Older cars of the teens and twenties had running boards with the doors set back... so as long as you had enough width to drive in opening doors was not a problem...
Modern cars generally are the widest at the doors plus you need a couple of feet just to open the door to squeeze out... much more to fully open.
I have no problem parking 3 Model A's or Model T's side by side in a 22' wide garage... which is a little over 21' wide inside.
24 x 24 inside measurement is about the minimum for a garage for full size vehicles to be comfortable on all sides.
My parents had a 21 x 28 which left room for a workbench across the back... garage door was 15' wide... a little tight.
Here are three of my cars that fit nicely next to each other... two don't have doors and one has bucket seats!
We have an oversized two car (2.5 car) garage that contains no cars. We like to park in the large, garage sized parking area outside of the garage (it's side entry). In the garage there's a workspace and tools and we do use the garage for storage. We downsized and had to put some things in there
