my heat and air are in one unit. There is a fan in the unit that I can run independently from either heat or air. It has its own control on the thermostat which has an "on" and an "auto" setting.

I run it all the time.

That's your main blower fan ("running it all the time" you are just circulating the air). It has nothing to do with the subject matter of this thread.

Many attics have temp-activated exhaust fans. It may be this you hear.

I'd turn it off as soon as it starts malfunctioning so you don't burn the motor out. But seeing as this post is a couple days old I'm sure you already figured out the issue and got it fixed.

heat pumps will run the fan a couple minutes after the outside unit turns off, its common but more than a couple minutes no
