1. You never have ONE mouse. If you see one, or hear one, the minimum you have in the house are dozens. Sometimes, hundreds.
2. Mice come and go. They are never in the house all the time.
3. Having a cat does not guarantee a mouse-free house. Total myth.
4. Mice are not usually looking for food, but will eat it if it's there. At this time of year, they are looking for warmth (the dryer vent!) and nesting material. Fiberglass insulation is one of their favorites, but paper towels will work, too.
5. If you SEE a mouse, you have too much clutter in the house. Fact. Sorry. They will not come out into daylight without enough "cover".
If you are freaked out enough about it, the best method to get rid of them is to call a pest control company. They will identify points of entry, and place baits where they will not be a hazard to you, your kids, or your pets.
Best of all, they will get rid of the mice, for a long time. Guaranteed!
Thank you for knowing what you are talking about. Mice come inside more when the weather starts to get cold. The most humane and efficient trap I have found is the one that electrocutes the rodent instantly. Please don't use poison baits (dangerous for predators that eat rodents) or glue traps (the trapped animals suffer terribly).
I live out in the boonies with fields on all sides and this time of year all kinds of rodents are on the move. I have FOUR mostly useless felines, but they do seem to repel the rats and mice.
One of the worst scares I had in my life was a couple of years ago when I sat down at my office desk with my morning cup of coffee ready to fire up the internet. I opened the top desk drawer for a pen and a rat sprang straight up in front of me about three feet in the air and then scooted down the hall.
Glue traps work great. Put them behind the washer or what not in the garage. Check them everyday so the rodent doesn't suffer too long. Just pick up the trap and whack it against something solid will do the trick. Dump the whole mess in a trash outside. Done.

There are ways to remove mice without making them suffer at all.

lots of great tips. I prefer the electronic zapem traps over the spring traps. I have seen mice steal even the smallest dabs of peanut butter off it and it never went off. no mess and they cant fool it.

Agree. If you want to kill them at least get a trap that kills them at once. Glue traps are cruel.
Katherine, I'm surprised your dogs didn't get it. Mine have caught a few critters that have come into the back yard. Fortunately, none have made it into the house.
