By the time you buy a proper ladder that's tall enough to safely reach those gutters, you can pay for the gutters to be cleaned and have gutter guards installed- a ladder that will reach 30'+ is going to set you back around $300+
I think I'm going the roof harness route...just seems way safer. Even if I'm on a 32' ladder I could still fall, etc...seems like it would be safer to be on the roof tied to one of those anchor deals-I'm pretty good at climbing on roofs, used to do it as a kid-my sister and I would literally run all over the roof while we were out of school for the summer and my parents were at work...looking back on that I'm surprised we never fell and broke our necks.
My BIL tried to save a few bucks a few years ago and was cleaning out his gutters on their 3 story home, fell off the ladder, broke his back in 3 places. Fortunately for him someone was watching out for him and an EMT neighbor was out in his yard, saw everything and was over there as soon as he hit the ground and held my BIL down so he wouldn't move. He is not paralyzed but did spend 6 months in a back brace and another 6 months in rehab. He is no longer able to run or do a lot of things he loves to do, he has bad arthritis in his back and will probably have some pretty severe pain as he ages. His medical bills were several hundred more then what he would have paid a gutter cleaner.
