Only YOU know the price of pavers in your area.
Only YOU know what your homemade ones will cost.... and whether they will even be close in quality to store bought.
No way we could tell you a cost difference.
And I am with K'ledgeBldr ... my time is worth WAY more than the dollars I might save.
Bah, I'm also someone with more time than money AND a healthy interest in doing things myself.
Total cost will be in favor of DIY as of the brake-even point of the molds and concrete, and getting nothing but cheaper per unit the more you make (assuming you never break the molds). If it interests you, then figure out the break-even point (looks like about 10 of the $4 16x16 pavers is the same cost as 1 17x17 mold and a couple bags of concrete), and make your decision from there.
If you have a LOT of space to fill, you'll want more than 1 mold but that increases your break-even point too....
I would imagine the energy costs of firing the clay would be the biggest outlay, followed by the clay itself. If you've never done it before, it seems doubtful you could beat mass production prices. Home Depot has pavers for about a buck and a quarter a square foot. How's your back?
The problem is not my back, the problem is my gut
That's why I do this type of projects
