Hi!
Our garage door opener will sometimes randomly just hum and refuse to open. If we go to the cord and pull down and unhook the garage and then rehook it back immediately, it will all of a sudden allow us to open the garage with the opener again. Any ideas why it is doing this?

It's really old- like 12 years old. How does one adjust the cord? Its that cord that locks and unlocks the garage door to the garage door opener itself.
When my 11 year old opener crapped out, I just put in a new one with wifi. Now, I can open my door from anywhere I have cell phone coverage. Works great if someone locks themselves out or you need to let someone in but don't want to give out a key.
12 years old for a garage door opener just might mean it's getting close to the time you need to replace the unit. Also, check the spring on your door to make sure it hasn't broken.

Why would a garage door opener only last 12 years?
I don't know what's wrong with jane^5s, but it doesn't sound like the kind of thing that would call for replacement. Depends on what it's doing when it's "humming". If the chain is moving but the door isn't opening, the problem is probably with the release assembly; if you can't fix it you can probably get an entire new trolley assembly for much less than a new opener. If it's not moving at all, something's probably sticking, this will take some detective work to find.
This is the problem. A simple adjustment on the limit switch is all that needs to be done. The mechanism is not going into the neutral position. When you pull on the cord, the door snaps back to where it needs to be in order for it to operate correctly.
