Barn doors look pretty good sometimes but they kinda come across as trendy. To me they get lumped in with shabby chic furniture, "industrial" decorating, words/phrases on the wall ("eat"/"family" ), etc. Many of these trends have been making the rounds on the internet for years. Admittedly, when I first discover some of them I think they are soooo awesome/cute...but then it takes me years to get around to it and by then I'm over it. I remember at one time wanting to shabby chic/chalk paint every piece of furniture, lol. It seems like a lot of the 20-30 something females (often first time homeowners) are all into these trends.
I think it's a trend that won't live too much longer. They aren't practical for every day use. Opening and sliding it closed will be a hassle. Then you will have to figure out how to change it to something else. If you notice, they really only look that good when open. I suggest going for something standard and investing the money in a very large piece of artwork that will provide a large visual like the door would.
We are building a new house and my wife really wants a sliding barn door for the master bathroom. Are there any negatives or issues to be aware of, other than the higher cost?
I've never heard of doing that, but it looks good in the picture! It will add some interest to your newly built home. I've heard of re-purposing barn wood for many things and I usually like the outcome.
I'm not a fan personally, but the biggest negative for me, besides the wall space, is that I think they'll look dated in a short time. I know they're uber-hip right now & for the last few years, but I don't see it as a long term trend. That said, that's true of many things we put in our homes, so if you like it, go for it.
Having just built a house last year, I've seen a lot of barn doors recently & I've never seen one with a motor, you just push them by hand. I guess if it was big enough or heavy enough, you might run it electronically, but I've never heard of that.
I'm on board with many other posters here. The charm is going to wear off in the not too distant future. One other thing that bothers me is the sound transfer between each room. I have a pocket door on my bathroom with this problem. There is no way for the door to completely seal allowing noise to drift out in your most private moments, or should I say 'movements'.
^^^ That could be easily masked with some "Muzak" playing...
BTW: Sorry, but if OP wants to be shielded from sounds, the answer is to move the powder room to a private area. A pocket door is no more or less soundproof than any other door (which are not terribly soundproof). So, unless you install solid doors, a standard door or a sliding door will both typically have a space at the bottom, and that is the main sound transmission path. If you're near the bathroom, you'll hear it.
I agree with everyone else. Trendy and, like anything faux, in the best case scenario it would only look appropriate in a certain style of house.
If youre building a cabin or ski lodge, and the door came from an actual barn, maybe, but otherwise no.
