There also one other thing to consider, is the pipes are not properly braced and as they change temperature they start to swing a small amount and bang into the wood parts of the framing around them.

This can be solved by getting a few feet of strapping built for this purpose, and strapping them solid so they do not move.

Thanks everyone. The heat is hot water heat. Contractor said he "pitched" the pipes properly, so assumed that was necessary whether heating is steam or hot water. My cabinets are supposed to go in this week, so want this taken care of before in case they have to open up the wall. Sad thing is, had I not mentioned the issue, he would have totally ignored it. As if, I didnt notice loud, forcefull banging going on in my house! Starting to wonder if contractor was qualified to do plumbing work. Sounds like it could be air, loose piping, piping banging into framing. Lastly, not sure if this differentiates what the issue could be, but...the banging is very slow and forceful. Sounds like someone is taking a sledgehammer to the door. The noise only happens a few, slow times (4-5 times) during each episode (when heat kicks on) for about 30 seconds. thanks everyone!

regardless of what happens wrt the contractor...
as a homeowner with radiators and a boiler you need to LEARN a few things.

First on the list is how to work the air vents.
Start there and then see if the noise remains

You have air in the lines (and maybe they're short a clamp or two).

He's an idiot and you can tell him I said so.
It's only normal unless you don't bleed out the air. LINK

Indeed. This is an air issue. HW systems are persnickety in this regard and need to be bled and brought up properly. It's not a shut off, do repairs, turn on proposition. There's more to it. The "contractor" is an idiot.
