But you know what I've found after years of entertaining in the kitchen? Unless it looks like a hoarder's house, with garbage and dishes sitting in the sink, on the counters and on the floor, no one actually cares. If it looks like this while you are cooking and eating, people won't care:

(though I never get even that messy while cooking)

Don't leave a kitchen like this and it won't be an issue:

And that's not even as bad as it could be:
OhMyGawd!

I am one that cleans up as I go. The only time is when doing the final bit of putting everything into serving bowls and then I tend to place the pots and pans back on the stove. It's as if they were still cooking on there and it is not as noticeable as a mess at the sink.

When the meal is over, plates get stacked neatly into the sink, bowls placed on the counter awaiting either smaller bowls or a wrap over them to go into the fridge or they get stacked within themselves and placed on top of the plates. Silverware go into the top bowl and all goes into the sink to be hidden until the guests leave. Cups and glasses get placed around the plates in the sink. Having a deep sink helps.

Quick wipe of surfaces and time to enjoy the time the company is still there. Hopefully with full bellies and happiness.

I'm one of those that if I invite others for dinner, I don't want them helping with cleanup. They are my guest.

If they help in making any mess, then I would love to have them help clean up. But it is still not required

Yep i'm the same way. Too many people care about what other people think of their home. These people aren't living in a true home they are only focused on resale value. I don't own yet but when i do i'm building my own home and it's going to be how i like it 100% not what other people like. I'm living in it they aren't.

I am, as well.

But I still don't want to see the kitchen from the living room.

Regarding small wind generators -- I assume you really meant wind-powered electricity generators rather than something to, you know, generate wind. It turns out the physics of electricity generation from wind powered turbines or windmills is such that the power generated increases with the cube of the length of the blade. Said differently, when you reduce the size so it's small, you reduce the power generated by the cube of the difference. Small ones don't make any sense. Really, really, really, really big ones make sense. Size matters, as they say.

So why have they been using it in million dollar + homes for the past 15-20 years?

Here's my take on how granite and stainless steel look dated. For granite, it depends on the pattern. Some granites probably won't look dated, and some will. Think of the brown speckled-pattern granites that were so popular in the 90s; those look dated, IMO.

Now, as for stainless steel, I don't think the material, itself, will look dated. But, my neighbor has a stainless steel refrigerator, and it still looks dated. Not because it's SS, but because it's 20 years old. Whether it is SS, white, or black, doesn't matter. It's the style of the appliance that makes it look old.

Bingo! It truly is the style that gets dated, not the material.....in some things like granite and stainless steel.

Well, paint-grade cabinets certainly are less expensive than stain-grade cabinets. White appliances, however, still scream Section-8.
