It's on the stoop area right infant of the front door. Dead baby bird likely fell out of the nest that's over my front door.

Saw the mom flying around. Could see the baby's wings broken. It was sort of 'splat.' Not dead, then. But I could see the chest beating slow and hard. (and in this heat...90+ degrees.)

I didn't want to touch it. And I guess there was nothing the mom bird could do.

I hope a cat, possum or skunk doesn't get it. (I don't even know if's they'd want to eat it.) And I don't want one of them up on my porch either but....

I've left it there for the night. I guess if it's there in the morning (dead?) I'll have to get a plastic bag and dispose of it.

Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I hope mama bird knows...it wasn't me....I wasn't the reason you baby fell. I don't need her diving at my head overtime I come go in and out.

PS: I had posted about this nest over the doorway in another thread. And if I'd gotten rid of the nest like my neighbor suggested I wouldn't be having this issue with now. But noooo, I had to let the birds stay. And posters were all soft and fuzzy, "let the birds stay" "don't bother the birds." Now I've got a dead baby bird right in front of my door, smack dap where I step to get out of the door....

Google and see if you have a wildlife rescue near you. Take it there.

Sooner the better.

Do not touch it. If you have to get rid of it, you can use a shovel to move it into a trash bag.

My guess is that in addition to the regular birds, you have a cowbird that was laid as a "guest" egg and upon hatching tosses out the rightful residents. Cowbirds don't follow U.S. law about disturbing nests.

You are getting an education, aren't you?

Yup. Don't touch it. Use a shovel and put it in a plastic or garbage bag or dispose of it in a wooded area (some other animal can eat it).

Well, I'm not going to have ANY bird nest, dead bird, baby bird, bird poop issues next year because I'm putting up spikes once they leave for winter.

I haven't looked out today yet to see if the dead chick is still there. If it is when I go out I'll take care of it then. Yuk.

Nature is a beast isn't it? And this isn't even the "wild!" ((unless you count just living life on a daily basis.))

Pick it up by a wing and give it a toss in the bushes. Most clutches lose most of the chicks. That's why they have a lot of them. It's normal for the runt to be pushed out by the bigger chicks.

Would have been better to just smack it with a shovel to end it's suffering.

Take a plastic grocery bag, turn it inside out, pick it up and turn the bag inside out. Now the chick is int he bag and you never touched it, just like picking up dog poop.
Throw the bag in your trash or dump it out in nearby woods or at the back of your property. Something will eat it.
