my house is well surrounded by nature so privacy isnt a real issue. i do want to be able to keep my dog in. ill probably delay that job. im not sure how much it will cost for the backyard of a 1 acre property but probably more than i want to spend right now.
How about horse fence? Galvanized wire with 2" x 4" holes in it, comes up to about four feet. It's put on metal fence posts and is used around horse pastures. You can install it yourself, it's not that hard. Ask at your local feed store. It will probably be a fraction of the cost of chain link.
Actually it comes in 6' height. I have it installed using 4x4x8 on my rear property. 100' roll of 12ga runs around $200.
id love to do some kind of super cool modern fence. i'm sure that would cost an arm and a leg though.
It depends. Many people go out and get wood palates for free from behind stores, tear them apart and spend personal labor time re-purposing them into fence.

I would not do chain link black or otherwise. It will reduce your property value. I would do wood or this kind of fence https://sc01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1W7ahI...Xq6xXFXXX9.jpg
it is much more classy and seen in high end neighborhoods.

You don't need to do the whole property, just an area for the dog to go out in.
I like that too. My son and DIL actually just built one and it was not hard. Just install the posts as you would for any verticle board fence, but install the flat boards horizontally.
Here's our new fence that hubby's been working on. You might be able to see from the picture, that we are matching up with the neighbor's fence, and covering the dreaded white PVC. When we're done, everything will be consistent, accept for a bit of wrought iron with a gate to the driveway.

I would defer to what your neighbors are doing. Take a look around and make sure you're matching or doing something at least as nice as everyone else is doing. Chain link isn't the prettiest but a high wooden fence sometimes seems like you don't like your neighbors and you're privatising your space. To be a good neighbor, knock on the doors of the surrounding houses and ask what they think. They will appreciate that.
That is a bit risky isn't it? You knock on the door and your neighbor exclaims "Nothing but a wood fence will do!" Then you install chainlink. You are setting yourself up for hard feelings. I agree with conforming to the neighborhood, but that can be done through observing your surroundings.
